So here the theme of this year 2014/15 comes in: Kuh/Gnu.In a way a double theme, to extinguish in Bachelor and Master Students. In a slightly changed jour fix rhythm, see the schedule attached, some single fields of attention will be covering the theme Kuh/Gnu; like food-, waste-, money- or mobility- strategies. Our first meeting will start with a brainstorm to expand this list of interests.
During the year we will have an unconventional lectures series where the cooking itself is the basic ingredient. The guest is at the same time the hostess. His or her quote is to create the ideal prerequisites for a conversation by offering good food. The beamer will be exchanged by a stove and a wooden spoon. Projection space is the dining table, on which the work is not just presented, but also is eaten and subsequently digested with coffee and wine. The view over the shoulder in the cooking pot is at the same time a view in the operation strategy of the cook. Not only as a space and design strategy, but also addressing the consequences for our own behavior as professional.
The Bachelor students, working on the theme Kuh, will start with strategies for our rooms. How can the steel-workshop be in the same time a kitchen or café, how can a lecture room be a dining hall, where guest are invited to lecture. How should the working space be designed to operate as conscious professionals.
The master students follow a comparable program, but with the theme Gnu. This brings in some more global viewpoints, concentrates on strategies on a more global scale. Their project will be in form of a charette. The word charrette may refer to any collaborative session in which a group of designers drafts a solution to a design problem. As a technique for consulting with all stakeholders, it typically involving municipal officials, developers, and residents. A successful charrette promotes joint ownership of solutions and attempts to defuse typical confrontational attitudes between residents and developers. The goal of this charette is not to work in a sense of reality, but to practice the work in a sense of possibility, to design and to practice strategies for a desirable future.
The exact subject of the charette will be announced at the beginning of the semester. I wish you all a very fruitful year, with a lot of knowledge, experiences and fun.
